ABOUT THE WORK

This work was included in the "" juried group exhibition at Voss Gallery (May 26 - July 1, 2023).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mary Southall is a San Francisco-based artist working in acrylic and mixed media. Born in Amarillo, Texas, Mary’s earliest memories are of the vast Texas landscape and sky that she experienced by her father’s side, a 5th generation farmer and rancher. Always drawing, painting, and making dollhouses and mud pies, her creativity was nurtured by her artistic mother, a technical draftsman by trade. Mary earned a BFA degree from Texas State University. After graduating college, she began her career by joining Cibola Studio/Gallery Cooperative and later went on to co-found Acme Art Gallery in downtown Austin before moving to San Francisco. She has been in numerous shows in Texas and California including The Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and The California Museum in Sacramento. Publications of her work include a Celebration of Craftswomen campaign, San Francisco Annual Open Studios promotional material and catalog cover, and a line of greeting cards. Mary continues to pursue her career, creating vibrant paintings and mixed media works out of her Hunter’s Point Shipyard studio.

"It’s the narrative that I’m most interested in, creating work that tells a story. In my current mixed media works I collage found paper and images into my art, giving the work visual depth and sense of relationship to the past. Layering paper and paint is like layering thoughts and emotions. Bits and pieces float in and out of my consciousness until one central vision prevails. Along the way I discover something new and a deeper understanding of myself."—Mary Southall
